Mean vs. Nice

Why is it that some people feel the need to be so mean and disrespectful and then some people are so sweet and you swear their only purpose is to make your day??

Last week was a long week for me, or so it seemed! It all started on Weds while I was at work. I had a new client come in for a cut and a partial highlight. We had what I thought was a thorough consultation as I wanted to MAKE SURE I knew exactly what she wanted. I proceeded to highlight her hair, shampoo, and then cut. After we were done I asked how she felt about it and she said she loved the cut, and liked the color.

Well, after her taking what seemed like FOREVER to come to the front to check out she finally pulled me aside and proceeded to tell me how horrible she thought her color was and how unsatisfied she was and when could I 'correct' this and on and on and on. Well, of course in my mind I'm thinking "ummm you just told me that you liked your hair and now it's all of a sudden so dreadful you don't dare walk out of the salon". So I assured her that all was well and that I could "correct" it on Friday if she could come in then. Of course she could come in on Friday as she was going to be "dying until then" as she put it.

I can't say that I've always done a perfect job on every client, I don't think anyone can. However, I can say that there's really only been one other person that treated me with such disrespect and that made me feel so horrible after leaving. Truly, it was NOT my intention to make her hate her hair!!

Thursday.....stressed over client coming in on Friday

Friday....anxious all morning waiting for crazy lady to come in!

Friday 12:30...crazy lady arrives...
Well, of course she sits down and first thing she says is that she hates her cut too! No surprise. So we had yet ANOTHER consultation and then I got to work. The final product was, in her words, "perfect" (ya, like I believe her) and "thanks" for taking the time (mmm). She left the salon a very satisfied client and was to rebook with me in 6 weeks...

Well, Friday wasn't all that bad. After I had shampooed crazy lady's hair we walked back to my station and there sat a beautiful bouquet of flowers!! The girls told me that Carol had dropped them off. OHHHH Carol!! Who is Carol? Well, Miss Carol has been coming to me for a year now and is probably the sweetest person I know! Always giving compliments and never has a mean word to say about anyone!

Miss Carol gave me a card with the flowers saying "THANK YOU" for always doing such a wonderful job on her hair and how much she has LOVED it since I've been doing it! What a perfect day to receive the flowers! After feeling so stressed and feeling down so much it was the pick-me-up that I needed! Thank you Carol for thinking of me and brightening my week!

Here's a photo of the gorgeous flowers:
One of the best things is that my "mean" client was there to witness the flowers from my "nice" client. Too perfect!

Oh the life of a hair stylist! I really love my job and enjoy what I do. I have some fantastic clients that come in and just make my day! I'm grateful to those clients to help me get over the not-so-good clients! Ü

Guys, you never called me to tell me how it all went! (Guess I could have called you too - I've been so sick for a week though - finally on the mend) Sounds like it went well though, so that's GOOD! I'm surprised she's rescheduled with you too! WOW! It just goes to show what kind of hairstylist you are though. You fixed it for her and now she is happy. I think that is GREAT! Good job! And thank goodness for cute Carol for sending you flowers!! What a perfect day to do that huh?! WOW!

Its a brave step to be in charge of someone elses hair and try to re-create what is in 'their' mind as to what they 'think' they want. Also, the patron having no idea what a 'good' color dye can do to a 'bad' color already in the hair. I think on the second try I would have just shaved her head and then gone, oops, I thought you said you hated your hair, so I got rid of all of it for you!!! hahahahaha
You are awesome Jen, to put up with such natural meanness and come away smiling. It would be an amazing world if we were all like auntie Carol huh? Love you sis!

Hey Jen,
I know exactly what you mean about mean people and nice people. But it seems that you handled it all very well. Kudos for you!

I know what you are dealing with, being the manager of a store I have to deal with all the rotten old ladies that pass through! even if i wasn't the one to tick them off. you just have to remind yourself that your better than that, and that your not going to stoop to that level. more often than not, they leave in a happy mood and end up coming back to the store in the future to do thier shopping. Its Life! but the customers that you look forward to, are the ones that make it easier for sure! thank goodness for those Carols HU!!!

That's AWESOMELY SWEEEEEEEET that your "crazy - mean" client was there to witness the kind gesture of Miss Carol. Kudos to you for handling the situation in the best possible way! Keep us posted on crazy ladies return visit in 6 weeks.
